So, I’m sure by now everyone has seen my accident post from yesterday. I’m still okay, although I’m slowly getting a seatbelt-shaped bruise and my forearm has little blisters from the airbag. But anyway, It’ll be a few days until I get any info on what insurance is going to give me, but then it’s time for car shopping! And, of course, “a few days” is too long to be able to hit Buy It Now on this Soarer:
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Which is just half an hour away from me. Low miles, very well cared for, automatic (not a plus, but since the Volvo isn’t driveable yet, I haven’t been able to officially learn stick. I need something I can drive right away, for work), and just plain awesome. It’s like the perfect car for me right now, but oh well... here’s hoping it ends without anyone hitting the reserve so I can scoop it up next week.
Or maybe I'll do more research and buy something normal, but where's the fun in that?

buy a ford tempo and you’ll never have to buy another car ever again

Please do not bid on this car if you are not a serious buyer, or do not have the money to buy it. The last time it was auctioned someone clicked buy it now never payed for it and drug out the entire process for a week. Please do not waste my time and more importantly yours. Thanks for looking and good luck!
Sounds like he gave you a solution to delay the thing for a week right there!

it will take you less than 15 minutes to regret trying to make a right-hand drive car your daily driver. I’ve driven plenty of RHD cars over the past decade, and I’ve always been happy to give them back at the end of my test period. total pain in the ass.

because the sorrow and depression it causes will sap the will to live causing Rainbow to lock the door and never once exit the bedroom ever again?

Awe, your poor Soul! :( It might still be beneficial to get medically checked out. Don’t want anything bad to sneak up on you and you end up with more problems than exciting car shopping .
I support a wacky car purchase! Life's too short to not drive the cars you really want to drive. :)

I’m not certain if you got checked out by medical personnel after the accident, but from the sound of it you should be watching out for things like whiplash. If you haven’t it really is good to just get checked out by a doctor if for no other reason than to get an all clear (the likely answer which may make it seem like a waste, it’s not ) or have a record started if something shows up later, and it could have been covered by insurance.

First time you have to make left at an intersection where it is even slightly difficult to see in a LHD car, you’ll regret it. Y ou’re basically pulling out on a prayer in RHD at an intersection like that.

That airbag shit is weird, right? I will never forget that smell/burn. Also got the seatbelt burn/bruise.
(hit drivers corners head on with a speeding explorer as I was turning into a parking lot when I was 16 is my little Mazda Protege5.)

Also, I’d probably stay away from any car imported from Japan that has an aftermarket gauge just sort of slapped onto the dash. Unless you imported it through Flavien - it’s probably not a bad sign in that case.

Sorry, my grandfather never met a Taurus, Contour, or Tempo he didn’t like, and they were all as beige as an 80/90s car could get.

I swear I saw so many Mercury Sables back then driven by old people which were painted “Mimosa,” kind of a beige-y yellow. Or yellow-ish beige. I bet if I’d gone to a Bill Knapp’s the lot would have been full of them.

I think I've heard daddy Doug say that you get used to it after a week maybe and it's not so bad.

At the risk of sounding more boring than a parent: if you need something for work, (i.e. reliable) consider which shops will be able to do the work on this vehicle and also consider how long it may take to get parts ordered for it too. Would be really unfortunate to have it in a specialized shop for two weeks while some silly component ships from Japan.

I remain a proponent of buying something cheap, reliable, and potentially unfulfilling short term , while getting one’s life/finances in order. Sacrifice today breeds rewards for tomorrow.

If you want a sporty toyota you should get one of these.

oh you get used to it fast. it’s the associated irritations that get you. Pretty much everything that you can drive up to (bank tellers, ATMs, mailboxes, etc.) assumes you’re sitting in the left seat. but the big one is what Tripper mentioned; if you’re making a left turn at an intersection and there are cars in the opposing direction in the left turn lane, it can be very very difficult to see if the oncoming through lanes are clear.

I had a friend in high school roll his tempo end over end, then barrel roll. It literally rounded the car into a general football shape. He kicked out the window, and walked home. Pretty much unscathed.

Took me a few hours to get used to it in my old 911. Not that big deal, just relearn to negotitate corners, and remember what side the steering wheel is on. Oddly I never had a issue with the wiper/turn signals, etc.

Y eah, and the thing was so tiny, too! I was picturing a big white cloud that fills up the cabin and smooshes you against the seat, but it's just a little beach ball. Didn't even reach me at all, except where my arm hit the side of it.

N othing specific, really. It’s just that I bought the Soul so I could do Lyft and Uber. I never really *wanted* it; it just happened to be what I needed at the time. So now I want to get a car that I truly want, and a low-mileage import checks all my boxes. Car people will like it because it’s rare over here (and because it’s a twin-turbo 1jz) and normal people will like it because the driver sits on the “wrong” side. So it’s cool, and it’s not an unreliable drivetrain. The only downsides are the inability to use drive-thrus without a passenger (which is fine, because I’m never eating while driving again after what happened), and the relative obscurity of some parts.

Well then the gauge is in French and reads kilo croissants per sqcm
